Dress Code

ABERNATHY MIDDLE SCHOOL DRESS CODE 2014-2015

DRESS AND GROOMING

The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Abernathy Middle School recognizes that parents are essentially responsible for their student’s dress and general appearance. Students are expected to come to school looking clean, neat and ready to learn, wearing clothing and exhibiting grooming and hygiene that will not be a health or safety hazard to the student or others. Abernathy Middle School prohibits any clothing, grooming or hygiene practices that, in the administration’s judgment may cause disruption of, or interference with normal school operations. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

Abernathy Middle School prohibits the following:

  • Pictures, emblems or writing on clothing that is lewd, offensive, vulgar or obscene.

  • Clothing that advertises or depicts tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs or any other prohibited substance.

  • Clothing or emblems referring to satanic, cult, or gang activities.

  • Torn clothing of any kind. (Frayed jeans are allowed as long as no skin is showing.)

  • Any clothing that is excessively tight.

  • Half-shirts or shirts that expose the midriff.

  • Muscle shirts or shirts that have sleeves cut out of them.

  • No type of fishnet shirt.

  • Underwear worn as an outer garment.

  •  Bandanas of any kind.

  • Chains of any kind.

  • Oversized clothing that sags.

  • For female students, spaghetti straps, fish net tops, halter tops and/or tops without a standard armhole are prohibited. Any top/shirt showing a bare midriff is prohibited.

    Standards & Details

  • The general appearance of the student and his or her clothing should not interfere with the instructional program.

  • Clothing will be designed, constructed and worn in a manner that is not suggestive or indecent.

  • Any attire worn on the lower body must fall in the knee area. Shorts must be hemmed. Shorts, split skirts, dresses and walking shorts must all meet these criteria. Whether or

not the garment is being worn in a “tasteful” manner will be taken into consideration when making any dress code violation judgments.

  •  Shoes are required at all times.

  • There will be NO SAGGING of pants, shorts or skirts. The dress code calls for this attire to be worn on the waist. Oversized clothing that sags will be considered a violation of the dress code.

  • Students’ hair will be clean and well groomed. The hair on male students shall not interfere with vision and must be kept above the eyebrows.

  • Male students must be clean shaven at all times, except for sideburns that may not extend below the earlobe.

  • Male students shall not wear ear rings or any other foreign object in the ear. Nose, eyebrow, lip and tongue rings may not be worn by any student.

    THE PRINCIPAL RESERVES THE RIGHT OF DISCRETION ON ANY AND ALL DRESS CODE ISSUES AND MAY TAKE ACTION ON THOSE.

    If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school.
